[Muse:  Car people seem as excited to see notable cars as they are to see notable racers, but while I enjoy looking at cars, I guess I'm more of a racer fan than a car fan, overall.  Which are you, dear reader?].

RUSH: Ron Howard's interview with Will Buxton on NBC at the 2013 Monaco Grand Prix

Nobody can say that Ron Howard is not trying his best to reach out to Formula 1 fans in an effort to both promote his upcoming movie, RUSH, and also possibly help the sport gain more popularity in the United States.  After the trailer clip in the video below, he is interviewed by Will Buxton.

Breaking sports news video. MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL highlights and more.

Very excited for this one! Good luck, Ron!

Formula 1: Nico Rosberg talks about his 2013 Monaco win, pre-party

Congratulations to Nico Rosberg for his win of the Formula 1 2013 Monaco Grand Prix.  Tire controversies aside, he's happy, and appears to validate my theory that if a racer can win just one grand prix in his/her career, Monaco is often the first choice.

We'll find out in time if the tire questions have any lasting consequences, but for now, he qualified on pole and held on through several race starts and stops, so that's definitely worth his celebrating, it would seem!

How does a young Formula 1 race car driver party?  How else -- according to Nico, "flat-out, all the way!"

Enjoy, Nico!

Formula 1: Webber, Alonso could tie Moss, Stewart at 2013 Grand Prix de Monaco

(Photos:  Top -- Fernando Alonso of Ferrari and bottom -- Mark Webber of Red Bull practice on the challenging road course at Monaco before the 2013 Monaco Grand Prix.  Credit:  Getty Images).

The Grand Prix de Monaco sends lots of motor sports enthusiasts, participants, and writers alike looking back at the history of Formula 1. In looking over the multiple winners' listing in the 70 races held on the tricky street circuit in glamorous Monte Carlo, one finds there are only 13 racers in the history of motor sport to have won this particular Grand Prix more than once. Two of those racers compete again this Sunday -- Mark Webber of Red Bull and Fernando Alonso of Ferrari. In doing so, either racer has a chance to tie his number of Monaco wins with two knights of the track -- Sir Stirling Moss and Sir Jackie Stewart.

[Muse:  I love the history of Formula 1, and I get especially excited reading and learning about the races at Monaco.  Such a beautiful location with such a challenging circuit.  No near misses!  It seems like if this was the one race you ever won, it would be worth many losses elsewhere!].

Nico Rosberg of the Formula 1 Mercedes team topped both practice sessions on Thursday for the 2013 Monaco Grand Prix. According to Formula 1, Rosberg posted times of 1m 16.195s in the morning session and 1m 14.759s in the afternoon. Red Bull drivers Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel, who have, between the two of them, won the last three consecutive contests at the historic street circuit, posted 1m 15.404s and 1m 16.014s, respectively.

THE GREAT GATSBY - The Car

(Photo:  Car featured in the 2013 film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby directed by Baz Luhrmann and starring Leonardo DiCaprio.  Credit:  Warner Bros.).

If you, like me, noticed your attention diverted from the story by seeing the massive, shiny yellow car in the latest film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic 1925 American novel, The Great Gatsby, you might like to hear (or be reminded of) how Nick Carraway described the vehicle in the novel.

In Chapter 4, Gatsby comes to pick up Carraway to go to lunch:

He saw me looking with admiration at his car.

"It's pretty, isn't it, old sport!" He jumped off to give me a better view.  "Haven't you seen it before?"

I'd seen it.  Everybody had seen it.  It was a rich cream color, bright with nickel, swollen here and there in its monstrous length with triumphant hat-boxes and supper-boxes and tool-boxes, and terraced with a labyrinth of wind-shields that mirrored a dozen suns.  Sitting down behind many layers of glass in a sort of green leather conservatory, we started to town.

What do you think?  Does Baz Luhrmann's movie incarnation match Fitzgerald's description?

According to the Los Angeles Times, the car above is a 1929 Dusenberg Model J.  Since the novel was first published in 1925, the car post-dates the time that Gatsby presumably would have been in the market for a jazzy car.  However, it certainly fits his character and the times.

More "historically accurate" vehicles, along with other, later 1920s-era luxury cars, are pictured in a slideshow here.  These include the 1920 Kissel Model 6-45 Gold Bug Speedster; a 1921 Mercers Series 5 Raceabout; and a 1923 Lincoln L-Series Sports Phaeton.

If you stay to read the credits of movies like I do, you may have noticed that "Jay Leno's Garage" received a credit in the film.  Why was that?  What did Jay do?  Was the car his?  According to The Hollywood Reporter, Leno, who is an avid car collector, "allowed director Baz Luhrmann's crew to record period-correct sounds of his Dusenbergs."

Later in the novel, of course, Gatsby's vehicle is called "the death car," for reasons you'll know if you've read the book or seen the movie.

[Muse:  Would you like to own a car like the Dusenberg above?  If so, where would you drive it, or would you just take it to a show and park it to be admired?]

Who will be the 2013 Legends of The Glen?

(Photo:  Formula 1 racer James Hunt, inducted into the Legends of The Glen in 2012).

In a press release on Thursday, Watkins Glen International announced that it is accepting nominations from fans for this year's inductees as Legends of The Glen. Last year, the track honored Derek Bell, Scott Pruett, and posthumously, James Hunt.

Per WGI, fans may nominate anyone who has made a significant impact at Watkins Glen International, including: owners, former Watkins Glen International staff, race officials and any current or retired driver from any of the series that have competed at The Glen. Accomplishments included in the nomination must have taken place only at Watkins Glen International.

[Muse:  If you're familiar with The Glen, who would you like to see honored as a "Legend" of this historic track?  I nominate:  Francois Cevert, who gave his life for motor racing at Watkins Glen.  October 6, 2013 will mark the 40th anniversary of his death on the road circuit before the 1973 USGP.  He also won the USGP there in 1971.]

'Watkins Glen International' by Michael Argetsinger and Bill Green

This 127-page book contains hundreds of historic photographs of the Watkins Glen racetrack over its evolution from a road course through the village in 1948 to the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide series season.

The book was released in early May, 2013 and will have its official launch at the International Motor Racing Research Center at 610 South Decatur Street in Watkins Glen on Saturday, May 18.  The launch will feature a talk by the authors that includes a slideshow of photos they used in the book, many of which come from their own private collections.

Mr. Argetsinger and Mr. Green are uniquely qualified to write the history of the track.  Argetsinger's father, Cameron, is credited with initiating the 1948 road race, and Green attended that race as a boy and has since served as race historian, now working at the International Motor Racing Research Center.
